Sterling Kansas

Time to come home from the daughter’s house. We decided that since our oldest grand son has started college in Kansas we would go home a different way so we could go by and see him. He had to be at his collegeP1110300 the week before his classes started so he could start football practice. So he had been doing what they call two a days for his first week there. That means he had to get up early and go out to the field for practice, stop for lunch and some meetings then back out for practice again.

We had called him the night before to let him know we were coming by to see him on the way home. He did not have practice on Sunday and we said we should be there around 10:30 that morning. We got there and found his dorm, the school has a beautiful campus. We called him on his phone but P1110284no answer. Charlotte said she would go in and ask if they could go to his room to get him. Well they took her down to his room. She knocked on the door, his room-mate opened the door and Caleb was still in bed. He saw it was his Maw maw and he jumped up, he told her she better go back to the car before she sees something she did not want to see since this was the men’s dorm.

Sterling is a small little town and it does not have a big selection of places to eat, so we went to a nearby town to eat lunch. After lunch we drove him P1110279back to the college, said our good byes and headed for home for we still had about 6 hour drive ahead of us.

Topeka Kansas

We took a little half day trip in to Topeka. Charlotte was telling me of a place that her and the daughter hadDrinking there home made Root beer. gone to eat at while they were on a Topeka shopping trip a while back. The place was called the Blind Tiger, the food there was great. I had the rib tips and Charlotte had the burnt ends. The story behind  the Tiger goes back to the prohibition days. TheP1110220 P1110221 establishment would have a stuffed tiger or a tiger of some sort and this would mean they had alcohol that could be purchased. And I guess the law did not know about what the tiger meant. Thus the Blind Tiger.

After leaving the restaurant we decided to go to the Topeka CombatP1110267 Air Museum. It cost $6 a head but I feel it was well worth it. They had two hangers full of all types of air craft. There were at least 35 air craft in the two hangers and 1 Lockheed EC-121T-LO Warning Star setting out side. Yes again since I drug her to the museum I had to take her to the mall to shop, after all that was only fair. If you click on the link below you will be able to see all the planes and other memorabilia.

Olathe Kansas

Charlotte was looking in the Kansas travel magazine. She saw an article about Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop-Farm which is located in Olathe Kansas. The article talked about this was a stop on the Santa Fe trail and how the Mahaffie’s located here and built there farm. How they would raise their own crops, and take care of the fresh horses for the stagecoach company.

We drove to Olathe to check out the farm. Even though it is in town now it is still a working farm, You can take a walking tour for six dollars and it is worth it. The employees there dress in the Style of the day. They had their own blacksmith to build horse shoes, repair wagon wheels, and tools for the farm. There is a real stagecoach pulled by two horses that you get to ride in so you can have the feel of what it was like. The house and a few of the other buildings are the original buildings. Before we left we also went through the museum.

I love me a good hot dog with chili and onions. My daughter and some of her friends told me about a place called New York Dawg Pond in Overland Park Kansas. I love them they had great flavor with the fresh buns, wieners, and the chili was to die for. Oh yea for you that or vegetarian you can order a dawg and they will put in a carrot instead of a wiener. Of course there was a big shopping mall there that my daughter loves to go to, so while we were that close I had to take the misses shopping there.

Baldwin Kanasas

While were at our daughters puppy setting I decided to take Charlotte on a little trip. Neither one us like to make decisions on what or where to eat. I was on my computer looking at Google Earth. I was looking around the part of Kansas we were in. I came across the town of Baldwin City which has Baker collage. Charlotte loves to see collage campus and this one was a beautiful. So I told her to get ready we were going out for lunch and when she asked where, I just told her you will see when we get there.

Baldwin City was not to far from Lawrence so after I had passed all the eating places and was heading out of town she asked again where we were going, again I said you will see. Finley we were at the exit and the sign said Baldwin City and she got excited for she had been wanting to go there. We drove around looking over the campus, of course she had to get out and take pictures. It was a pretty little town with an old train station and some nice looking old homes. The town did not have very many eating places but I had seen a place on Google earth called The Salt Mine so I decided to take her there. Well it was a biker bar but we went ahead and went in to eat. There were only two tall tables with stools and of course the bar. We set at one of the tables and the lady bartender asked what we would like, so I asked what they had that was good and she told us the daily special which was a cheese burger and fries. It was a very good burger.

Forty Nine years with the Love of my life

our weddingSunday August 22nd 1965 It was a hot summer day. I haven’t seen Charlotte since around 11:59 the night before. She told me that it was bad luck to see the bride on the day of the wedding before the ceremony starts. After the ceremony we had the reception across the street at her folks house. It was raining very hard and we all got soaked running across to their front door. I felt sorry for Charlotte’s mom though for while we were all there lighting struck the house and knocked out the kitchen stove, luckily there was no fire. It does just seam like it was yesterday to me, for her it probably feels like 100 years. We have had such fun together all these years. She is my lover and P1090783best friend. I tell her daily that I love her. I tease her that she married me for my money, which she has yet to see. Also she needed a strong man to carry her cello for her, I always asked her why couldn’t she play something small like a violin. The Lord has truly looked over me and my family. It has been a wonderful 49 years,

Grand Puppy setting

Our daughter had a couple trips lined up so we told her we would come up and take care of the hounds. These two basset hounds are getting up in years but they are fun to watch, that is when they get the energy to do something. One of their favorite things to do is watch P1110217doggy TV. That is when you open the front door so they can watch for someone walking by or maybe even another dog. Then they start barking and run out the back door through the doggy door and bark like crazy. Of course after that they haft to come in and lay down for a nap.
