Tuesday April 9. Day 8 Well we say good-bye to Washington DC as we head out at 06:30 heading for Charlottesville VA where we went to Monticello which is Thomas Jefferson’s home. I thought this was neat considering the name of the ship I was on was the USS Monticello LSD 35 which is now retired at the bottom of the ocean somewhere off the coast of Hawaii. We went up to the house and took the tour; we had been here several years ago when our kids were very young. I could not get over how smart Thomas Jefferson was, some of the things he had in his house like a weather vane mounted over his porch with a shaft coming through to the underside with a compass mounted to the shaft and that way he could step out on his porch and see which way the wind was blowing. He also had the first copy machine for he had made a contraption that when he wrote a letter it would follow his handwriting and make a duplicate of whatever he had written. We were not allowed to take pictures in the house but it was amazing of all the things he did to make his home comfortable and useful for back in that day.
After leaving Monticello we headed west to Ohio and we stopped for dinner at a Bob Evans in Jackson Ohio. The reason I am mentioning this is that we were supposed to be there at 5:30 but we were running about three hours late and yet Bob Evans got us in and out and the food was outstanding, and the waitress was cheerful and prompt with our food and refills on our drinks. We did not get to our motel in Miamisburg OH until about 11:00 pm and had to be up and on the bus by 7:00 am; this was the only time on the entire trip that we were off scheduled.
